3 Crippling Myths About Content Marketing Every Entrepreneur MUST Ignore

Content Marketing gets a lot of attention now, but it’s been around since the first caveperson scratched a stone across a cave wall and made a picture to sell their saber tooth tiger teeth… or used muskrat pelts!

Content marketing is NOT NEW… but it’s more necessary than ever (if you want authority in your marketplace and to be viewed as the EXPERT you are)!

So, if somebody tells you the following, flip them the bird 🐔 and keep going on your merry way!

MYTH #1: Content marketing is only for big brands.

This statement is false for a few reasons. 

First, content marketing is a great way for small businesses to connect with their target audiences. 

By creating and sharing engaging, valuable content on a consistent basis, small businesses can build trust and credibility with potential and current customers.

Additionally, content marketing is an effective way to drive traffic to a small business’s website and generate leads. 

It’s also an affordable and effective way to differentiate yourself from larger competitors.

MYTH #2: Content marketing is all about creating new, original content.

This statement is a myth for a few reasons. 

First, content marketing is not just about creating new content – it’s also about curating and sharing existing content. (Look at 99% of memes that make their way around social media… or articles… or videos! There’s a LOT MORE sharing / curating going on that actual content creation.)

Second, not all content needs to be original – in fact, some of the best content is repurposed or evergreen content. (Take a look at your hard drive for things you created a while ago… there’s gold in there!)

MYTH #3: Content marketing is expensive and time-consuming.

This is a HUGE myth! 

Content marketing is not expensive and time-consuming. In fact, it can be quite the opposite. 

Content marketing is THE MOST cost-effective way to reach your target audience and can be done in a timely manner. (20 minutes or less per day)

Content marketing is not expensive because it does not require a large budget to produce quality content. You just pull it out of your head!

In fact, many businesses are able to produce quality content on a shoestring budget (got an iPhone in your pocket?), if you have a clear plan and strategy in place.

If you are looking for a cost-effective and time-efficient way to reach your target audience, content marketing is, in my opinion, the best option.

In fact, it’s been my go-to method for more than 25 years… and I like to think I’ve done okay 😉
