(Why you’ve been planning your marketing all wrong!)
New year… new you… new plan. Right?
Everybody’s got the plan and the dream that “This year is going to be different!” This year, we’re all going to get rich! Everything’s going to hum along like a well-oiled machine… until about January 15th.
That’s when the wheels fall off, and you realize – plus or minus – you’re doing exactly what you did last year. Then everything goes to crap.
I’m here to tell you it’s not your fault! Why? Because no one took the time to show you that just having a promo calendar is not enough to plan that bright future, let alone execute it.
You’ve been lied to by all the experts out there who tell you that if you put together a promo calendar “and just have the discipline to follow it,” you will succeed.
The problem is, those chuckleheads didn’t teach you about the two other calendars that go with the promo calendar in order to create that well-oiled, successful marketing machine
Forgetting about those other two critical calendars will derail your plans faster than a runaway train smacking a stalled semi-truck stalled at the railroad crossing.
First up, there’s your promo calendar.
Yes, it’s the backbone of your marketing strategy.
You jot down your key sales dates, product launches, and webinars. Seems straightforward, right? But here’s the kicker: if that’s all you do, you’re setting yourself up for a world of disappointment.
Without the other two calendars to support it, your carefully laid plans often fizzle out before they even hit the launchpad.
Next on the list is the offer calendar.
This is where you’re laying the groundwork for success.
Think lead magnets, offers, upsells, webinar sales copy – the whole shebang. It’s not enough to simply know you’ve got “a launch” coming up; you need to ask yourself what you’re going to promote and how you’re going to promote it during that time.
Without this piece, you’re just spinning your wheels, and that promo calendar you’ve built.
It’s going to sit there unused, collecting digital dust.
Then comes the content calendar.
This is your weekly rhythm, the heart beating behind your marketing efforts.
The content calendar tells you when to craft the newsletter, write your sales copy, create the ads, and build the social media posts that will drive traffic toward your offers.
If your promo calendar is the roadmap and your offer calendar has milestones, then your content calendar is all about execution.
It’s the difference between writing a book and just having an idea of what your book could be.
Without this structure, it’s easy to fall prey to last-minute scrambles that only add to your stress.
Now, you might be wondering why so many entrepreneurs ignore these essential tools. It often boils down to a lack of knowledge from experience.
People hear “create a promo calendar” and think that’s the golden ticket. But nobody tells them they need to build actionable steps underneath that plan.
When you only focus on setting milestones with no daily actions to achieve them, you create a never-ending cycle of disappointment, and before you know it, your confidence is shot.
Here’s the truth: every entrepreneur who only creates a promo calendar and hopes for the best ends up stuck in a cycle of underachievement.
When goals become overwhelming, they lead to anxiety and a sense of dread that’s about as appealing as a colonoscopy.
However, when you take those big goals and break them down into daily actions, not only do you get a clearer path forward, but you also find you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible.
So, how do you avoid all this crap?
Start by deciding what big targets you want to hit and then work backward.
If you have a webinar, what needs to happen before that? A lead magnet? An email campaign? Create milestones and then break those down into small daily actions.
This simplicity is key. Keep it digestible and actionable. A straightforward plan is the most powerful weapon at your disposal because it’s adaptable when life throws curveballs.
And for goodness’ sake, don’t forget to periodically review your calendars!
If you let too much time pass, you could miss major market shifts or changes in your own life that could impact your ability to execute. If you find yourself stuck, try simplifying your approach or grouping similar tasks together.
Remember, the key is clarity and control.
At the end of the day, a solid marketing machine isn’t built on complex plans but rather simple, actionable steps that lead to real achievement.
Embrace the three calendars, and you’ll find the confidence to not just plan… but to act.
